The aim of this survey is to understand how children aged eight and over, and young people from primary schools, secondary schools, sixth forms and colleges feel about important areas of their lives, the support they receive, and the big decisions they make.

The survey is a health and wellbeing survey designed specifically to cover key priority topics for children and young people in Norfolk. These topics include physical health, emotional health, drug, alcohol and tobacco/vaping knowledge and use, oral health and safeguarding.

The survey will be run by the Schools and Students Health Education Unit (SHEU), a specialist national company who has been undertaking surveys in schools for over 40 years.

The survey is altered for different age groups and covers the topics appropriate to that age group. There is also an accessible version for use by Special Schools.

Key aims include:

• To gain a greater understanding of your pupil's Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs - this will help you to understand your pupils' learning styles or preferences so you can tailor your teaching.
• To gain a greater understanding of your pupil's knowledge of the Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum - this will help you with creating an inclusive, safe and respectful school environment where bullying, sexual violence or sexual harassment is not tolerated.
• Evidence for Ofsted and your governing bodies - including personal development, resilience and welfare and demonstrating a proactive approach.

What is the commitment required?

• The full survey will take around 45 minutes to an hour to complete. We understand that this is a significant time commitment for both you and your pupils. We recommend that your pupils complete the survey with adult support during one dedicated session - a lesson period or form time, for example.
• The survey will be open to all Norfolk schools between 18 December 2023 and 27 March 2024. As the survey opens on the last week of the autumn term, we hope that some schools may have time to complete this during this quieter period. We do not want the survey to interfere with any preplanned holiday activities or for teachers to feel the survey needs to be considered during the school holidays.
• The survey should not be completed alone during home learning. Children and young people feel less motivated to engage and are more likely to give up if they get stuck when completing things like this on their own.

What happens after the survey?

• Local authorities and partners receive a report containing their results alongside a commentary from SHEU.
• Bespoke full reports and topic reports will also be available, with inequalities analyses from SHEU.
• Results can be used by schools/colleges to promote health education programmes, as well as in class work across the curriculum.
• NCC will analyse and share with you the results from the survey at a county and district level.
• You will be able to compare Norfolk's results with those from other local authorities undertaking SHEU surveys.
• You can use your results to plan and deliver strategies, priorities and services.
