Gender Questioning Children: Draft Guidance for Schools and Colleges from Department for Education (December 2023)

On 19 December 2023 the Department for Education published draft non-statutory guidance for schools and colleges about children questioning their gender. The intention of the guidance is to provide clarity on how to approach a range of issues related to this subject including but not limited to registration, changing names and pronouns, safeguarding from bullying, single-sex spaces, uniforms and physical education.

This is draft guidance for consultation and the Department for Education is encouraging schools and colleges, parents and the wider sector to engage with the consultation process, which will run for 12 weeks until 12 March 2024.

Please visit GOV.UK for further information including the full draft guidance and consultation.

Next steps

  • Schools and colleges are encouraged to access the draft guidance and respond to the consultation.
  • The Education Safeguarding Team will liaise with relevant colleagues within Children's Services and the wider Safeguarding Partnership to provide schools and colleges with advice and guidance about the implications for practice once the outcomes of the consultation are known.
