Norfolk County Council Carbon Reduction Campaign

Simple changes can achieve big results

As many of you will know from this month's core brief, we have committed to a 25% reduction in carbon emissions generated by the council by 2014. Some of this target can be met through investment in energy efficiencies via the Carbon and Energy Reduction Fund (CERF). But the rest can only be achieved if we work together to change our behaviour.

Energy efficiency is crucial to saving money and we are launching a campaign encouraging staff to 'switch to a low carb diet'. To reduce waste, the campaign is almost completely paper free and we have created new Intranet pages which you can visit
http://intranet.norfolk.gov.uk/cex/csandc/carbon_campaign/carbon_campaign.htm

You can find out how to take part in the 'low carb diet' and what changes the council has already made to reduce energy use. There''s news of activities taking place during Climate Week (21 - 27 March) and a chance to take part in a '1 minute challenge' - with great prizes on offer.

Everything you do makes a difference so I am asking all staff to play their part. Together we can create a low carbon council through smarter working practices. Here are some simple but vital changes you can make:-

  • Switch off lights and office equipment when not in use.

  • Turn heating down a notch.

  • Use recycling bins where provided.

  • Walk, cycle or share a lift to meetings where possible.

  • Where members of staff do not have access to email, I am asking managers to tell everyone how they can take part by making the simple changes listed above. There will also be more about the campaign in future issues of Horizon.

I hope you will do all you can to help make the 'low carb diet' a success.
