Norwich Pride - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) - Saturday 30 July 2011

For the attention of Head of Student Development/Head of PSHE

Stonewall's School Report proved that Homophobic bullying is almost endemic in Britain's schools. Almost two thirds (65 per cent) of young lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils have experienced direct bullying. Seventy five per cent of young gay people attending faith schools have experienced homophobic bullying. Even if gay pupils are not directly experiencing bullying, they are learning in an environment where homophobic language and comments are commonplace. Ninety eight per cent of young gay people hear the phrases that's so gay or you're so gay in school. Less than a quarter (23 per cent) of young gay people have been told that homophobic bullying is wrong in their school. In schools that have said homophobic bullying is wrong, gay young people are 60 per cent more likely not to have been bullied. Thirty five per cent of gay pupils do not feel safe or accepted at school. The Norwich Pride Youth, Education and Families Team want to work with you to change this in Norwich's schools.

Norwich Pride is a celebration from the local Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) community for everyone. The third Norwich Pride will be on Saturday 30th July 2011 and includes a picnic in Chapelfield Gardens as well as stalls, speeches and entertainment at the Forum and a Parade through the City Centre. There are parties, comedy and live music at venues across the city as well as films, art exhibitions and family-friendly events. Norwich Pride is organised by a Collective of friendly, creative, enthusiastic volunteers who want to ensure Norwich is a city where everyone can feel safe and proud to be themselves. Our sub group is working hard to make sure that young people are informed about LGBT issues and take a full part on the big day.

We would appreciate the chance to come into your school and give a short session on LGBT issues and what is going on with Norwich Pride. This can be in the form of a short assembly, approx 15 mins or a longer PSHE session. The session could include:

  • Celebrating famous LGBT people.

  • Why are people homophobic?

  • What do you do if you think you are LGB or T?

  • How can you support your LGBT friends?

  • What is Norwich Pride and how can you support it?

  • To book a session or to talk through your ideas please contact Nick O'Brien at nick@norwichpride.org.uk or call 07717504210

We look forward to hearing from you
