Are your heating controls in 'holiday mode'?

Save energy, save pounds and develop habits for more sustainable resource use!

Energy data from last year shows that many schools left heating controls on standard mode over the Christmas holidays, wasting valuable money and energy. It can also undermine pupils' energy efficiency campaigns and their morale.

Simply ensuring that your heating controls are changed to holiday mode not only saves money and carbon but it also sends a message to your pupils about the importance of excellent resource management.

Please share the following Pre Holiday Check List with your building manager:

  • Turn off ventilation systems where not required
  • Ensure that all portable electric heaters are switched off
  • Ensure that the heating in any mobile blocks are set to reduced times/frost protection temperatures if there are water pipes in the building
  • Ensure all doors and windows are closed (and locked) and wherever possible ensure that curtains and blinds are drawn
  • Switch off tea boilers, water coolers, electric hot water heaters and cool drinks machines
  • Switch off external lighting
  • Switch off all IT equipment and fax machines at the mains
