Walk to School Week and Bike to School Week Summer 2014

Walk to School Week is taking place from 19th-23rd May this year.

Bike to School Week is taking place from 9th -13th June

Many schools find these annual weeks a good time to encourage children and their families to walk or cycle to school and to help with the challenge of reducing congestion outside the school gates.

Physical activity guidelines for children and young people recommend one hour of moderate to vigorous activity each day (the kind that makes you feel slightly out of breath) as part of 2-3 hours of general daily activity. We know many children are not reaching this target so encouraging more active travel to school is a very positive approach to supporting childrens health and well-being.

For some schools the logistics of walking or cycling to school present significant challenges for busy or less confident parents or for those in rural areas where there are concerns about safety. There are a number of ways schools can adapt activities to meet particular needs.
