Free for all schools in the UK to enter and there are daily prizes for schools to win.

The Road Safety team is supporting Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel the UK's largest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting, and cycling challenge. On each day of the challenge, schools compete to see who can record the greatest proportion of their pupils taking active journeys to school.

This year's new theme, Change your journey, change your world, focuses on climate change and the actions pupils can take to reduce pollution and improve air quality.

In a YouGov survey in 2021 half (49%) of UK school pupils said they were worried about air pollution near their school, while 57% of pupils described the environment around their school as having too many cars.

This event is to encourage more families to travel to and from school actively. In turn this will improve congestion and air quality around schools and promoting healthier lifestyles, by building physical activity into children's daily routine which helps them to arrive to school more relaxed and alert, and is great for their mental wellbeing too.

Prizes

Sustrans will enter schools into daily prize draws for rewards if over 15% of your school takes part on each day of the challenge. Prizes up for grabs include accessories and equipment to help your school travel actively.

The Road Safety Team are also giving away 3 Reflector Shop active travel starter packs from Brightkidz, in a prize draw that will be held week commencing 10 April 2023.

All you have to do to enter is:

  • Sign up and then tell us how you have taken part in the Big Walk and Wheel challenge by completing our Active Travel Survey.

Once you have completed the form, individual schools will be added to a prize draw and the 3 winners will be contacted week commencing 10 April 2023.

Participating in the Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel also contributes towards gaining Modeshift Stars accreditation. All Norfolk schools can register for free https://www.modeshiftstars.org/
