Introduction to Young Interpreters Scheme

This brief fully funded session will equip you with the knowledge and skills to begin to establish a Young Interpreters Scheme in your school.

Trained Young Interpreters help newly arrived pupils feel welcome and settled in their new school environment. The scheme also develops the confidence, communication and leadership skills of the Young Interpreters. For schools it's a way of valuing multilingualism whilst acknowledging and celebrating the skills of their learners.

Young Interpreters can be speakers of English only or speakers of other languages. Together they use a range of inventive ideas modelled during their training to communicate with their new classmates.

Running this scheme will support an inclusive ethos while contributing to the values celebrated by Schools of Sanctuary. You will hear from colleagues who have successfully run this scheme which has been recognised by Ofsted.

At the end of the session, you will have:

  • Increased knowledge about the Young Interpreters Scheme.
  • An insight into how the scheme can work well in your school.
  • An opportunity to ask questions.
