Safety in Physical Education - Changes and Compliance

The Association for Physical Education (afPE) produces national guidance for safe practice in PE and school sport. Norfolk County Council endorses this safe practice manual alongside the Secondary PE and School Sport Health and Safety Code of Practice and the Primary Curriculum Code of Practice. This guidance is reviewed and renewed every four years in the form of a publication; this was last done in 2008 and 2012 is the next edition.

For many years Norfolk County Council has purchased and issued the publication to all maintained schools. Unfortunately the Local Authority is no longer in a position to make such a purchase for every school, college and setting. Therefore, in order for schools to obtain the 2012 manual, this cost will need to be met by schools.

The new afPE Safe Practice in Physical Education and School Sport 2012 can be purchased direct from www.1st4sport.com at a unit price of £44.99 plus postage etc. Schools that purchase directly will need to invest appropriate time to digest and understand the differences in guidance and the impact that this has on their practice.

Alternatively, by working together we have proposed an approach which will ensure that you have the up to date guidance publication and are:

  • taken through the changes in detail
  • supported to identify the appropriate changes and modifications to practice

Peter Whitlam, author of Safe Practice in Physical Education and School Sport 2012, will deliver a number of sessions for Norfolk schools. These sessions will support delegates to ensure compliance with safe practice. They will also allow you to address specific questions and situations directly to ensure a more robust understanding than simply purchasing the manual and working in isolation to interpret the new guidance.

The cost of the one-day expert led session is £163 for Norfolk LA Maintained schools (£184 for all other clients including Academies, Free Schools and out of county settings) and includes the full afPE Safe Practice Manual. We strongly recommend that schools use this approach to ensure that their practice matches national and local guidance.

Please complete the booking form attached or book on-line by June 15th. Booking by this date will allow us to keep you a place on the course you have chosen and order the manual on your behalf. Course dates will be in July and September - specific dates on booking form or at www.cpd.norfolk.gov.uk/sdms (reference: ECSJ6).

    Action required by schools:
Schools should act in one of two ways to ensure safe practice in PE and school sport.
  • Schools must purchase the 2012 manual from the Association for Physical Education (2012 Edition) at a cost of £44.95 plus post etc. This is available at www.1st4sport.com. Schools must then interpret, modify and implement the new national guidance ensuring compliance accordingly.

  • Schools can book a place on the Safe Practice in PE courses organised through Norfolk County Council. These are available at a cost of £163 per delegate for Norfolk LA Maintained schools (or £184 per delegates for all other clients) and INCLUDE the 2012 manual.
