Information for Designated Teachers for Looked After Children

The Governing Body must ensure a qualified teacher is appointed as the Designated Teacher (DT) for Looked After Children to promote their educational achievement. The DT is required to submit an annual report to the Governing Body, enabling Governors to make judgements about the role of the DT in the context of wider school planning in relation to levels of progress, patterns of attendance & exclusions, issues arising from Personal Education Plans, the use of Pupil Premium and whether the needs of both Gifted and Talented and SEN pupils are met. Attached is a template to assist the completion of this report.

There is also a requirement for schools to ensure they regularly provide the Local Authority with details regarding their current Designated Teacher for LAC, including dates training took place, date started in role etc. There is a database within the My School section of the Norfolk School’s website where school staff (using the headteacher login) can record/update/amend details of Designated Staff Responsible for Looked After Children, Child Protection and Pupils with LDD (SEN) and their Governor counterparts (where appropriate). Please check whether your school has an entry on the database and whether or not it is up-to-date. Please enter any missing data as a priority.

All Designated Teachers for LAC will receive a pack of information to support them in this role.
The electronic document of the DT's annual report to Governors must be returned to the Virtual School email when completed.
