Prevent Duty: Further Advice for Schools
Further to MI Sheet 108/15, the Department for Education published advice for schools on the Prevent duty, which came into force on 1 July. This advice is intended to help schools and childcare providers think about what they can do to protect children from the risk of radicalisation.
A briefing note on how social media is used to encourage young people to travel to Syria and Iraq, has also been published jointly by the Department for Education and the Home Office. It is important that the Designated Safeguarding Lead reads this advice and disseminates the information to staff.
In order to support schools to fulfil the responsibilities outlined in the Prevent Duty Guidance, further Workshops to Raise Awareness of Prevent (WRAP) have been organised for the Autumn Term 2015. The DfE guidance states that ‘as a minimum, however, schools should ensure that the Designated Safeguarding Lead undertakes Prevent awareness training and is able to provide advice and support to other members of staff on protecting children from the risk of radicalisation’. In addition to the workshop, DSLs that attend the training will be provided with further resources including a model policy, training materials and guidance to cascade to staff.
The dates of training are as follows:
