The English Language Support Service
Is improving literacy a target on your School Improvement Plan?
Are you currently considering how to use your Pupil Premium funding strategically to support vulnerable groups?
The English Language Support Service (ELSS) is a specialist support service within Children’s Services.
All members of our team are skilled and experienced in supporting schools to raise the achievement, and promote the inclusion of:
Newly arrived pupils for whom English is an additional language (EAL)
Developing literacy with more advanced bilingual learners at risk of underachieving
Refugees and asylum seekers
Other underachieving vulnerable groups, including white working class boys
We work with schools to identify school strengths and highlight areas of improvement in EAL provision and to promote the inclusion of BME and EAL learners. We aim to develop staff confidence in delivering mainstream support for EAL learners and other vulnerable groups by contributing to strategic whole school approaches.
From September 2011 we are able to offer a variety of advice, support and training packages, including those which are based on the following materials:
The New Arrivals Excellence Programme (NAEP)
Excellence and Enjoyment: learning and teaching for bilingual children in the primary years
Ensuring the attainment of more advanced learners of English as an additional language.
In order to ensure that we can plan for the future needs of schools we would appreciate schools returning the 2011-2012 application form by 1st May 2011. Any school confirming a buy-back package by this date will be offered an audit visit before the end of the summer term. Applications for support will, of course, be accepted after this date.
